Differences Between Young and Older Adults in Working Memory and Performance on the Test of Basic Auditory Capabilities†.Larry E. Humes, Gary R. Kidd & Jennifer J. Lentz - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The Test of Basic Auditory Capabilities is a battery of auditory-discrimination tasks and speech-identification tasks that has been normed on several hundred young normal-hearing adults. Previous research with the TBAC suggested that cognitive function may impact the performance of older adults. Here, we examined differences in performance on several TBAC tasks between a group of 34 young adults with a mean age of 22.5 years and a group of 115 older adults with a mean age of 69.2 years recruited from (...)

    The Future of Bioethics: It Shouldn't Take a Pandemic.Larry R. Churchill, Nancy M. P. King & Gail E. Henderson - 2020 - Hastings Center Report 50 (3):54-56.
The Covid‐19 pandemic has concentrated bioethics attention on the “lifeboat ethics” of rationing and fair allocation of scarce medical resources, such as testing, intensive care unit beds, and ventilators. This focus drives ethics resources away from persistent and systemic problems—in particular, the structural injustices that give rise to health disparities affecting disadvantaged communities of color. Bioethics, long allied with academic medicine and highly attentive to individual decision‐making, has largely neglected its responsibility to address these difficult “upstream” issues. It is time (...)

    Grammatical rules and explanations of behavior.Robert E. Sanders & Larry W. Martin - 1975 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 18 (1):65 – 82.
Theories in the behavioral sciences are constrained so that stated relationships are empirically testable and explanations have predictive power. These constraints constitute the classical paradigm, and are trivial just when ?causal relationships? do not hold. It appears that such relationships do not hold for linguistic, and presumably other, behaviors, thus precluding study within the classical paradigm. This compels study of those behaviors in terms of the non?traditional approach to testability and explanation developed in Chomskyan linguistics. These constitute the grammatical paradigm. (...)

Maquiavel E Hume sobre a natureza da Lei E seus fundamentos sociais.Maria Isabel Limongi - 2018 - Kriterion: Journal of Philosophy 59 (140):571-589.
No lugar disso, ele pensou (...)

Making spirit matter: neurology, psychology, and selfhood in modern France.Larry Sommer McGrath - 2020 - London: University of Chicago Press.
The problem of the relation between mind and brain has been among the most persistent in modern Western thought, one that even recent advances in neuroscience haven't been able to put to rest. Historian Larry McGrath's Making Spirit Matter is about how a particularly productive and influential generation of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French thinkers attempted to answer this puzzle by showing the mutual dependence of spirit and matter. The veritable revolution taking place across disciplines, from philosophy to (...)

Looking to Hume for justice: On the utility of Hume's view of justice for american health care reform.Larry R. Churchill - 1999 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 24 (4):352 – 364.
This essay argues that Hume's theory of justice can be useful in framing a more persuasive case for universal access in health care. Theories of justice derived from a Rawlsian social contract tradition tend to make the conditions for deliberation on justice remote from the lives of most persons, while religiously-inspired views require superhuman levels of benevolence. By contrast, Hume's theory derives justice from the prudent reflections of socially-encumbered selves. This provides a more accessible moral theory and a more realistic (...)
